Sedation Dentistry in clarksburg

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication (sedatives) to relieve dental anxiety and make patients feel comfortable and relaxed during a dental procedure that may otherwise feel invasive, uncomfortable, or frightening to the patient.

Dental anxiety is a persistent fear of the dentist. Patients who have dental anxiety may experience an increased heart rate, sweat, racing thoughts, and feel a sense of panic when they need to go to the dentist.

When the fear escalates to the point of total avoidance of the dental setting, this is considered a phobia. Dental anxiety is common in patients of all ages and the good thing to know is that it can be easily managed and doesn’t need to result in putting off necessary dental care. Consultation

Dr. Zaidi will need you to come in for a consultation so that he can review your medical history to determine if you are a suitable candidate for sedation. You will need to inform us if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking any medications, or have a medical diagnosis.

Preparation

Each sedative has different preparation requirements. You will need to fast for 2 hours before receiving nitrous oxide. Before we administer oral conscious sedation, you will need to fast for 6 hours. You also need to arrange for someone to take you to and from your appointment.

Administration

After you’ve properly followed your preparation instructions, you’ll receive the sedative. We administer laughing gas through a nasal mask at the start of your appointment. However, oral conscious sedation is taken by you at home about an hour before your appointment via swallowing an anti-anxiety pill.

Monitoring & Aftercare

During aftercare, we will monitor you for however long is necessary to clear you to go home. Nitrous oxide will wear off within just a few minutes. However, oral conscious sedation will last for the rest of the day and we will need to ensure you have a chaperone to look after you and drive you home.

Types of Sedation

Minimally Inhaled Sedation

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is a gas that is inhaled through the nose after a nasal mask is fitted over your face. You should be able to breathe through your nose and not have any respiratory problems if you are going to receive this sedative.

Since this sedative has a quick onset, you’ll feel the effects within just a few minutes. These effects include euphoria, relaxation, giddiness, tingly sensations, and calm. You remain awake and aware of your surroundings but you won’t feel anxious.

This will last for the duration of your appointment until we remove your nasal mask. Within just a few minutes of removal, you will return to normal with no lingering hangover effects. Since you will feel very relaxed, there is a small chance that you will fall asleep but we can easily wake you up. You may not remember the appointment afterward.

Oral Conscious Sedation

This is another conscious form of sedation that is taken in the form of a pill that is used to treat anxiety. This is usually a benzodiazepine. You need to take this pill an hour before your appointment.

However, once you’ve taken it, someone else needs to drive you to your appointment since you won’t be able to drive with this medication in your system. This is a deeper sedative than laughing gas and is better suited for complex procedures like oral surgery or patients with severe dental anxiety.

Once the effects kick in, you’ll feel drowsy, sluggish, sleepy, and heavy. You have a higher chance of falling asleep after receiving this sedative and an even smaller chance of remembering the procedure afterward.

If you do fall asleep, we can still wake you up with a small nudge and you can still communicate with the dentist because you won’t be unconscious. When you try to talk, you may have slurred speech and feel out of it.

After the procedure, you will need someone to drive you home, as you won’t be able to drive for 24 hours. You will feel very tired and should get some rest when you get home. Someone needs to watch over you for the rest of the day.

Is Sedation Safe?

Yes, sedation is perfectly safe when administered by qualified professional dentists. There is also some level of risk that you incur when you take any type of medication. However, you are in good hands at Urban Dental Studio, where we carefully review your medical history before administering sedation.

Your vitals will be monitored throughout your treatment so we know if we need to alter the levels of sedation and we will ensure that you know how to prepare to be sedated for a procedure. Nitrous oxide is our mildest and safest sedative, which makes it great for children.

Oral conscious sedation is considered moderate sedation but you can be assured that this FDA-approved medication and any issues in healthy patients are unlikely.

When can Sedation Be Used?

Sedation can be used any time you want it. Sedation isn’t only reserved for complex and invasive treatment like oral surgery, despite popular belief. Sedation is a useful tool for any dental treatment, no matter how non-invasive or routine it is, for patients with dental anxiety and special needs.

"I came in with an infected wisdom tooth that was causing a lot of pain. Pressure / pain on the whole right side of mouth, cheeks and eyes from the infection. Dr. Zaidi numbed around the tooth and extracted the wisdom tooth with no pain within 10 minutes! I was pretty nervous because I have never had a tooth removed or any issues with my teeth in the past. Dr. Zaidi made me feel super comfortable and walked me through the whole process. I also just got my night guard from my teeth grinding in my sleep and it feels great! I highly recommend Dr. Zaidi for any dental needs. She’s the best!"
