Dental crowns can last for 10-15 years when properly cared for.
Dr. Anum Zaidi will examine your teeth and may take some x-rays to look at the extent of the damage. If you are determined as a good candidate for dental crowns, an appointment will be scheduled. If your tooth is too damaged or has extensive decay, you may need some other treatment first, such as a root canal.
The tooth that is receiving the dental crown will need to have a portion of the enamel filed down to fit the dental crown into the mouth and so it is uniform with the other teeth. The amount of enamel that will be removed is proportional to the thickness of the crown. You will be given local anesthesia so the process is painless.
Impressions of your teeth will be taken and sent to an outside dental lab that will create a dental crown that matches your natural teeth in color, size, and shape. The impressions also serve as a model for the way your bite fits together. Your dental crown will be ready within 2-3 weeks and in the meantime, you will be given a temporary crown to protect your filed down tooth.
Once we have received your official dental crown, you will return to our Clarksburg office to have a fitting. The color and fit will all be examined and you will inform us if anything does not feel right so adjustments can be made if necessary. Then we will administer a local anesthetic to cement the crown into place. Dr. Zaidi will give you instructions on how to care for your dental crown for the long term.
Dental crowns are a restorative procedure used to protect damaged or weak teeth but they can also be used to cover up cosmetic imperfections.
Dental crowns have many restorative and cosmetic advantages. Cosmetically, they look very natural. You can also choose porcelain crowns that not only look like your natural teeth but are also stain-resistant.
Dental crowns efficiently cover up dental imperfections such as discoloration, chips, or unevenly sized or shaped teeth. In terms of restoring the function and structure of the teeth, dental crowns are very durable and offer a lot of protection for weak, damaged, and broken teeth.
Crowns restore the structure of the tooth and enable the patient to use the tooth to chew again. Crowns can also greatly improve a patient’s confidence when their damaged tooth has been detracting from their smile.
Your mouth will be completely numb during the procedure, and you can even be sedated at our office, if you wish. Getting a dental crown can prevent your teeth from decay, and minimize the risk of a painful infection.
A well-made and properly placed dental crown will typically last up to 15 years. It’s critical to maintain good oral health habits to enhance your crown’s longevity. These practices include brushing twice per day, flossing once per day, and seeing your dentist every 6 months for a professional cleaning and exam. Same-day crowns can be a little less durable, but they can still last several years with proper care.
Dental crowns can be used to save a tooth that cannot support a filling due to the size of the cavity.
