how do dental fillings work?
A dental filling is a restorative procedure used to refill the structure of a tooth. When you have a cavity, the decay in the tooth needs to be removed by drilling into the tooth. A filling rebuilds the structure of the tooth. We will use a local anesthetic to numb the area before drilling into the tooth. Decay needs to be removed to avoid infection, pain, and extensive decay that can lead to tooth loss.
After the decay has been removed, we will use a composite resin material to fill the tooth and restore its structure. Composite resin matches the color of your natural tooth so it will look like a real tooth when you smile. what to expect at your dental filling appointment in Clarksburg
Oral exam & x-rays
First, an oral exam will be conducted to check the condition of your teeth and look for the presence of tooth decay. We may notice a cavity during a routine dental checkup. In some cases, x-rays may be taken to check the extent and severity of the decay.
Anesthesia & Removal of Decay
If we detect that you have a cavity, we will schedule a dental filling. At a separate appointment, we will administer local anesthesia to numb the area so you won’t feel any pain. We will use a dental drill to remove the decay from the tooth.
Filling the Tooth
We will apply an acid gel to the tooth to remove any bacteria and then fill the inside of the tooth with a composite resin filling. The filling will be cured with a UV light and will instantly harden. Finally, we will polish the tooth. You can use the tooth as soon as the anesthetic has worn off.
Follow Ups
It’s important to return to our Clarksburg office every 6 months for a dental cleaning and checkup to have plaque buildup removed from the mouth and for early detection of oral health problems like cavities.

No, getting a filling does not hurt because we will numb your mouth with anesthesia. The only part of the procedure that could cause pain without anesthesia is the drilling of the tooth that is used to remove decay. The filling itself is painless. After the anesthetic has worn off, your tooth may feel a little sore for a day or two. If that is the case, take some anti-pain medication and try not to chew on that side of the mouth until the pain subsides.
